Deep Down Dispatch

DDB does summer...the story so far.

Despite the restrictions still in place, we have had a great start to our summer season. It has been brilliant to get back out there and do what we love...having fun playing great music!

At the end of April we had a very busy day in the studio recording our first album. We laid down five tracks and left the studio really pleased with the initial results. This is currently being mixed and should hopefully be available on Spotify, iTunes and Amazon music towards the end of the summer. With hits from Culture Club to Harry Styles, we guarantee you will love it!

May saw us actually out and performing to people! We enjoyed a fantastic reception at The Queen's Head, Watnall where a great crowd endured some extremely changeable weather for two sets of brass hits. We are looking forward to returning on 18th July.

On 29th May we needed lips of steel as we performed two gigs in one day! During the afternoon we played two sets at the fabulous Bustler Street Food Market in Derby. The crowd were amazing and we enjoyed playing two sets in the blistering heat. Check out our social media pages to see photos and videos of the fantastic crowd. In the evening we headed across to Loughborough to play in the beer garden at one of our most supportive venues, The Swan in the Rushes. Again, the crowd were fantastic. It is always brilliant to see people aged from 18 to 80 singing along and dancing, especially to our favourite Dolly hit...9 to 5!

Video has always been a big part of what we do and this first part of the summer has been no exception. As we mentioned in our previous blog, we've joined up with Two Button Brass in the USA to record two epic lockdown videos. Check out Blinding Lights on our Facebook page HERE. Bohemian Rhapsody will be released this coming weekend on the Two Button Brass YouTube channel.

We are nearly out of lockdown and at the time of writing restrictions are due to end fully on 19th July. That means we have so much more to look forward to over the rest of the summer. Check out our "Where to see us" page to find out where you can join us over the next month or so. Hope to see you soon!

Pleased with our past but buzzing about the future!

Welcome to our new blog! This first post is a review of our first year together and a look towards the exciting plans we have for the future.

Lockdown has been hard on all musicians with the closure of venues, restrictions on meeting up to rehearse and worry about income. This has been no different for us at Deep Down Brass. We have done our best though to make the most of this difficult period by planning many exciting projects to coincide with the wider opening of society.

Phase one of this was our series of isolation videos created between April 2020 and February 2021. Not only were these great to test out new repertoire but also brilliant fun! Personal favourites include Bulletproof (LaRouxe) Feel it Still (Portugal the Man) and 9 to 5 (Dolly Parton). You can see all of our videos on our YouTube channel HERE

As soon as we were able to get together we quickly started taking bookings for socially distanced events. During the late Summer we enjoyed performing across Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire at venues ranging from schools to pubs to cricket clubs. We loved playing for (distanced) crowds and they certainly enjoyed our shows too!

In late Autumn we spent a gruelling day recording twenty five Christmas tunes, songs and carols ready for our charity musical advent calendar. This was an eclectic mix of traditional carols alongside modern classics by artists such as East 17, Mariah Carey, The Pogues and Shakin' Stevens. The videos were edited by Ben H (a huge undertaking...well done Ben!) and released daily from 1st December 2020 up to Christmas Day. We were pleased to link up with Bloomin' Arts, a Surrey based charity who offer opportunities for people with learning disabilities to enjoy, develop skills, perform and work in the arts. ( We were also able to get out and perform in our local communities which alongside the donations from the online videos helped us to raise a brilliant £225 for this great charity.

January 2021 brought a new national lockdown and so all face to face activities were forced to end again. During the period up to Easter we consolidated by planning the year ahead and arranging new music...lots and lots of new music! We also commissioned the up and coming composer Matt Eden to write us a piece of our own. Look out for the premiere of "Access Denied" in the next few months.

So, we are just about up to date. Yesterday we were able to have our first in-person rehearsal in 4 months after getting by with Zoom meets and text conversations. It was so great to get together! We also recorded our individual parts for two collaboration videos with Two Button Brass  an amazing brass quintet based in Los Angeles, USA. The videos will be released on our Facebook page as soon as they are ready to share.

Looking to the future, we have an exciting few months ahead. Next week will record our first album which will be released for streaming, download and sale in early Summer. More info in our next blog post. We also have several weddings, gigs and fairs booked in for the Summer, all still dependant on the easing of lockdown restrictions continuing to be on track. We can't wait to share more information as each event is confirmed over the coming weeks.
